Stating both yours and your girlfriends locations would give you better answers.
But without knowing either I would suggest looking into the trains, trams and tubes. If that is not possible then perhaps buses/coaches such as the Greyhound buses.

Take a bus.. Thats about as cheap as you can go.. Or you can advertise in the newspaper you are traveling to X and would like to share a ride and expenses with another female… I have done this and it works ;; Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania
