How can I take care of a guinea pig on a budget?

Gitter Jones? asked:

Okay my daughter wants “her very own” guinea pig. We already have another.

For One Pig:

Bedding $22 a week
Pellets $9 Every 2 weeks
Orange, Carrots, Lettuce $10 A week
Toys and Chew Toys $10 Every 2 weeks

That is a total of $166 a month

Any advice for providing for a guniea pig on a super LOW budget?
Yes and hay, thanks for reminding me $5 a week.

    Simple Bad Breath Formula

I have 22 guinea pigs and I don’t even spend that much each month!
Bedding, I use a thick layer of newspaper, which is free and a deep layer of hay which I get from a farm/equestrian center for about £2/$5 a bale, which will last 2 pigs ages!
Pellets, you could save money by changing feed to mix, I use pasture mix which is actually for horses but has all the nessecary ingredients to keep your pigs healthy, mixed with oats and dried grass. All of which are under £10/$25 for 20kg sacks and as long as the sacks are kept dry will last a good while!
Veggies do cost quite a bit but I buy horse carrots for about £2/$5 for 12.5kg!! which is a great price, I also go round the supermarkets and look for bargains which brings the cost down alot.
Toys and chew toys, to be honest..you dont need them! Pigs love nothing more than an old paper bag/ an old [clean] sock stuffed with hay! there are loads of toys you can make for free =]

If you need any more help just let me know =]

Well one thing you can do it stop buying that expensive bedding and get fleece instead. This is comfier for the guinea pig and it means all you have to do is wash it, don’t have to buy more and more.

Bear in mind you will have to put it in the washing machine or hand-wash it.

I am quite concerned that hay isn’t on the list you gave… I take it they have unlimited hay? Hay is something which needs to always be available to a guinea pig. It is the most important thing in their diet.

    Yes
    1. buy big bags of bedding its $20 and it lasts 1 to 2 months.
    2.buy a big bag of hay $20 lasts 1 to 2 months
    3. but the least expencive lettuse at best yet market 5 dollars lasts 2 weeks
    4. buy the big chew toys the guinea pig will not get through them as fast about 12 dollars a month
    5. become a member at petco or petsmart its free and u can get great savings.

Grand total: 84.00 every 2 months.

Cure For Bad Breath in 90 Seconds a Day

well…you could always use paper or newspaper, if not, then just get the bedding. And for the food, guinea pigs will eat lots of things, if their low on food give them bread, veggies, and fruits from your kitchen. And you don’t need to get them a toy, just throw in a peice of wood(that is safe ofcoarse) and they’ll be happy, they dont need toys when your daughter plays it. You dont need to buy a cage, just make one, maybe out of wood or a cardboard box, they will never try to get out, there to lazy. hope i helped:D good luck

do not use the newspaper like the other people are saying i don’t have a guinea pig but i have done research on them, the newspaper; the ink it rubs off on the guinea pig it’s not good for them they will chew anything i want a pet i am STOCKING UP on paper towel rolls i have 150 so far those are just cardboard after finished rolls of toilet paper they are good toys as-well and re-cycling! :)
