How much money could you save if you unplug everything when not in use?

_ asked:

I heard that when things are plugged in (like t.v.s) and not turned on, that they’re still using electricity. How much electricity/ money could I save by unplugging everything? Have you done this? Did you save money off your bill?

I currently have a $130 electric bill and I’m not satisfied as I feel like I don’t use that much electricity and it’s going to get worse once winter comes!

    saving money

you will save around 2 dollars if less.if you do not believe me try to unplug everything when not in use for one month see if your electricity goes down at all.i doubt it.people mostly do that for fire hazard reasons.

    Simple Bad Breath Formula

Wow, I hear you, I am in the same circumstances. My electric bill is the same and it baffles me. I know mine is so high for 2 reasons: One, I have an electric water heater, very very inefficient and expensive way to heat water. Two, I have a chest freezer. I can only assume the freezer takes up a bit of juice (in addition to regular appliances running like the fridge).

Some things I’ve done to eliminate a little extra energy use: I use a thermal carafe (coffee pot) when I make coffee. I preheat it with hot water, then as soon as the coffee’s done brewing I pour it into the carafe to keep it hot, versus keeping the 1500watt coffee maker on for two hours every day. That right there will save $10/mo if you leave your coffee maker on 2 hrs every day.
Also, I unplug other thing like the stereo, extra tvs not regularly used, the vcrs, etc. All these things use electricity, even if it’s just to run the clocks on them, and they add up monthly and yearly.
When I leave for 2 days or more, I flip off the breaker to my water heater…that saves it from heating water for no reason. Any less than 2 days I don’t bother doing that.
I’ve also heard that putting your tvs and dvd players, etc on a 6-way strip (surge protector) helps, because you can flip that off, then your tvs wont use any juice when they’re off.
Lastly, try getting a bunch of those curly florescent bulbs, they’re expensive at first but use only 1/4 the electricity roughly. A lot of times you can find 10-packs at places like Lowe’s or Home Depot and they’re much more affordable than buying singles.

To figure out what you’ll save or spend when anything is running or not running, look on the back of the appliance and find out how may watts it uses, then use this formula:

Kilowatt Hours = (Watts x Hours of Operation) divided by 1000

Approximate Operating Cost = Kilowatt hours x Average Cost per Kilowatt Hour (usually around 10 cents….or “.10″ ) —then do the math to figure out what you’ll spend in 24 hrs (day) or a whole month (24 hrs x 30 days)

Using this formula, you can see that a 1500watt appliance like a ceramic heater or a coffee maker uses about $108.00/mo if it were left on 24 hrs a day, 30 days a month. (which most aren’t of course)

    Hope this helps a little.

Anything that comes on with electricity instantly is ‘already using’ electricity. That’s why appliances come on so quickly. Your best bet is to contact the electric company and ask them for ways in which to lower the electrical use in your home. Yes, they really will help you. Some have booklets which will define exactly how to cut your electric costs. I hope that this has helped you. Peace!

    Bad Breath Remedy Report (Book)

any small appliance that are not used should be put away , like toasters, can openers, toaster ovens, the things that have a clock on them I never unplug , I **** to reset the time on them ,if you replace all your light bulbs with a lower voltage ones and keep the lights off when you are not in the room ,this will help you save, turn the computer off during the night ,wash your clothes when you have a full load and hang your laundry outside to dry not only you save money but the environment as well, if you cannot hang them outside purchase a close drier for indoor use, turn the TV off if you are watching it , make sure that the windows are well insulated to avoid heat loss in the winter , You said that your bill is $130 .00 this also depends on how many people live in the house and the price of electricity where you live we all have a different life style therefore it’s difficult to compare things. if you feel that you are paying too much than you must take a good look on what you are doing and try to adjust a few things.

Your electric bill should indicate in detail how they arrive at the total amount of the bill.
To a novice like you, to compute for the average cost per kw-hr , divide the total bill amount by the no of kw-hr. The kw-hr consumption should be indicated in your bill. Assuming you have consumed 300 kw-hr, $130/300 kw-hr = $ 0.43/kw-hr.
I don’t know the appliances you have. To determine the power consumed(kw) for appliances that are off but with the chord plugged to the outlet, refer to this site:

Multiply the kw rating by the number of hours it is plugged then you have the kw-hr consumption.
Remember this: 1kw = 1000 watts. so if the appliance is rated 10w, it will be 10watts/1000 = 0.01kw
I hope I answered your question.

the are called vampire volts and what you would save depends on how many appliances you have that constantly use power. things like a toaster and blender do not, it is the items that have a light on the face when turned off.
