should I supplement my oil forced air system with my propane direct vent fireplace to save money?

cmate asked:

with oil prices going up, I am trying to weigh my options for heating my house – I have an oil burner furnace, with hydro air, and also have a propane direct vent fireplace. does it make sense to try to take advantage of the fireplace to save money?

  1. ANON

Prices of both propane and oil fluctuate so one is not necessarily cheaper than the other.
Your forced air system is more efficient in heating the home and the fireplace the room it is in. So if your strategy is to keep the room warm and the home cool it will work, if not you will have a warm home and an overheated room.
